The Shepherd Family

Little is known of our Shepherd family, which was based in the parish of Auchtergaven in the early 1700s

Elizabeth Shepherd
Bef. 1732 - aft. Jun 1757

Elizabeth was Calum's, Jamie's and Pippa's seven times great grandmother.

Not a great deal is known about Elizabeth Shepherd, except that she married Andrew Lamb on 29 NOV 1744 in the parish of Auchtergaven. The marriage was recorded both by way of contract money for the banns called in advance, and in the marriage register itself.

In the kirk session minutes for Auchtergaven (NRS: CH2/22/1/51 Auchtergaven):
Nov 4th (1744)

As banns from Jo: Reoch & Christ McKenzie both in this par from Alxr Murray & Isa Mcfarlane from Jo: Cathron & Jean Spout from Jo: Cook & Mary McLiesh & from And: Lamb & Eliz: Shepherd all in this parish thrie pounds Scots

The OPR entry then notes the marriage itself (OPR M 330/00 0010/0013 Auchtergaven):
Marriages 1744
29th Nov
And: Lamb and Elizabeth Shepherd were married

The couple then resided at Coltrennie fermtoun within the parish, where they raised a family.

Little else is known of the Shepherds in Coltrennie. An investigation in the kirk session minutes for Auchtergaven notes that a John Shepherd was accused of antenuptial fornication with a Beatrix Miller in Coltrennie, the accusation being recorded on 29 NOV 1765. The record noted that he was of Coltrennie also, and unmarried at the time - possibly making him a nephew of Elizabeth in terms of his age. He vehemently denied the allegation for several years, until the point where he was finally read the Oath of Exculpation on 3 JUN 1770 (Source: Auchtergaven kirk session minutes, National Records of Scotland, NRS CH2/22/1/355-361)

Elizabeth and Andrew had at least six children in Coltrennie (Culterenny, Cuiltrennie, Coltrannie), within the parish of Auchtergaven.
