The Fenton Family

The Fenton contingent of Calum's and Jamie's ancestry dates to 18th Century Perthshire, Scotland. There is only one member of the Fenton family known about so far:

Jean Fenton (17?? - ????)

Jean Fenton
Bef. 1727 - aft. Nov 1744

Jean was Calum's and Jamie's seven times great grandmother.

Although Jean raised her family in the parish of Trinity Gask, it is not known when or where she was born. A strong contender is the Janet Fenton born on 11 FEB 1722 in the adjacent parish of Auchtergaven, to David Fenton and Janet Barnet:

Janet Daughter to David Fenton and Janet Barnet in Easter Kirktown was baptised the 11th of February Jajvijc and twenty two

This would fit the bill in that her first daughter was indeed named Janet, which fits with the Scottish naming pattern, in which the first daughter is traditionally named after the mother's mother.

A Jean Fenton is also found to have been baptised in the adjacent parish of Muthill on 31 MAR 1710, as noted in that parish's episcopal church baptismal register - if so she was the daughter of John Fenton and Jean Buchanan:

Mar.31. Jean daughter to John Fenton and Jean Buchanan at Abercarney born March 29.

This seems less likely in that she would have been aged 29 when she married in 1739, which would be quite late in the period.

An even more remote possibility is that she may be the Jean Fenton christened in Perth on 13 JUN 1725. If true, her father would have been Robert Fenton, and her mother Janet Coldstream, which also certainly fits in with the fact that she called her first daughter Janet. However, this would mean that she would have been fourteen when she married - not impossible though, as the law actually permitted marriage for girls from the age of 12.

Our Jean married John
Leich on 27th July 1739 in Trinity Gask, Perthshire, Scotland.

June 24 received from Jean Fenton 01 04 00
John Litch and Jean Fenton both in this parish proclaimed.

July 2nd the minr was at the Sacrament of Gask. John Litch and Jean Fenton proclaimed pro 2do (?)

July 8th...John Litch and Jean Fenton both in this parish proclaimed pro 3ho.

July 27 John Litch and Jean Fenton were married.
