The Leitch Family

This particular branch of the Leitch family has been traced back to 17th Century Madderty in Perthshire, Scotland.

The name Leitch is most likely derived from the Old English word 'laece'. meaning 'doctor'. The bloodsucker got its name from the doctor, not the other way around! An alternative derivation is from the ancient Gaelic surname "O'Laechaille".

The following members of the Leitch family are known to be related to Calum's and Jamie's family:

John Leich 1???
John Leich abt 30/8/1713 - ???? (married Jean Fenton)
John Leich 1/6/1740 - ????
Janet Leich 18/4/1742 - ???? (married Peter McEwan)
Isobell Leich 30/11/1744 - ????

John Leich
Bef. 1699 - aft. 1713

John was Calum's, Jamie's and Pippa's eight times great grandfather.

The fact that John is our earliest known ancestor is confirmed from two baptismal records from his son John in which he is noted as John Leich younger, confirming the existence of a John Leich senior. Nothing else is known of him as yet, except that in 1713 he was resident at 'Ardunnie' (Arduny), in Madderty parish in Perthshire, Scotland, just over the parochial border from Trinity Gask.

John Leich
abt 30/8/1713 - aft. 1744

John was Calum's, Jamie's and Pippa's seven times great grandfather.

John was baptized in the Perthshire parish of Madderty in 1713:

Sab August 30th John Leich in Ardunnie had a child baptized called John.

The fact that John's father was called John is again confirmed from the baptismal records of two of his children, in which he is noted as John Leitch younger. The naming pattern also supports the link.

John married Jean Fenton in Trinity Gask, Perthshire, on July 27th 1739. The OPR entry reads as follows:

June 24 received from Jean Fenton 01 04 00
John Litch and Jean Fenton both in this parish proclaimed.

July 2nd the minr was at the Sacrament of Gask. John Litch and Jean Fenton proclaimed pro 2do (?)

July 8th...John Litch and Jean Fenton both in this parish proclaimed pro 3ho.

July 27 John Litch and Jean Fenton were married.

The phrase "both in this parish" implies a temporary residence, rather than the phrase "of this parish", implying origin. It seems that the couple married in Trinity Gask perhaps as the parish of origin for Jean, and that the couple then settled in John's parish of Madderty, where their own childen were born at Muirmouth.
