The Clement Family

Motto: Ne Parcas Nec Spernas - Neither Spare Nor Dispose

The crest of Clan Clement / Lamont

The surname Clement means 'mild' or 'merciful' in Latin. The name is a diminutive of the surname MacClymont, meaning 'son of Lamont', a surname which was first recorded in Perthshire in the 15th Century.

There is only one member of the Clement family known so far in Calum's and Jamie's ancestry:

Anna Clement (16?? - 17??)

Pre 1698 Clements in Fowlis Wester

In Fowlis Wester, Perthshire, there are references to two members of the Clement family in the Hearth Tax payments of 1694. On line 57 there is mention of "John and Rot (Robert) Clemet wt (without) a kilne" ie the house they lived in had no fireplace.

There were three different John Clements who were married in Fowlis Wester shortly after this. The first married Janet Dow on 26th June 1698. The second John married Janet Buchan on 2nd Nov 1701 and the third John married Christian MacAra on 22nd Mar 1702. There was only one Robert Clement married around this time. He married Janet Lutfoot on 18th Jan 1685.

Presumably, one of the above, if not more, was related to Anna Clement, but no further evidence has yet been found to suggest the connection.

The GRO Scotland holds OPRs listing mortcloth dues from 1714 to 1799, which may provide more information.

Anna Clement
16?? - 17??

Anna was Calum's and Jamie's great great great great great great great great great grandmother.

Anna was proclaimed to marry John
Leitch on 4th December 1698 in Fowlis Wester, Perthshire, Scotland:

Sab, December 4th
...John Leitch and Anna Clement both in this par, having given up their names were proclaimed in order to future marraige and payed in to ye box ye ordinary dues three Bsloz (amount unreadable, but from reverend's running total at side, works out at 1pound 6pence).
The parties named above were proclaimed for the 2nd time.

CHILDREN of ANNA CLEMENT and JOHN LEITCH:

John Leitch
b: 1703 (approx) d: 17??

Anne Leitch
b: 27/7/1716 d: ????

Not sure about his, but seems a coincidence that an Anne Leitch was born in Fowlis Wester when there was a Mrs Anne Leitch in the area also. If true, then there are probably more children in between.
