GETTING STARTED
Starting off is one of the most
difficult processes. The most direct way to get started is to interview members of the family willing to talk about their
past. Beware though - often people have dark secrets they don't want you to get near! In other cases, they don't appreciate
what you are trying to do, so it is useful to keep them updated with your progress, to allay any fears.
Take what
you learn from these discussions with a pinch of salt - often the mind remembers what it believes to be true, rather than
what is the case. For example, Calum's grandfather was convinced that he was a quarter Belgian, because he had been told as
a child that his grandparents had been evacuated from Belgium during the first world war. In fact, his grandfather had been
working as a shoe salesman in Brussels at the time, and was trapped there throughout the first two years of hostilities, before
dying whilst in hiding from the Germans. However, he was in fact from Blackford in the Scottish Highlands...
