The Leitch Family

This particular branch of the Leitch family has been traced back to 17th Century Fowlis Wester in Perthshire, Scotland.

The name Leitch is most likely derived from the Old English word 'laece'. meaning 'doctor'. The bloodsucker got its name from the doctor, not the other way around! An alternative derivation is from the ancient Gaelic surname "O'Laechaille".

The following members of the Leitch family are known to be related to Calum's and Jamie's family:

John Leitch 1???
John Leitch 1720 - ???? (married Jean Fenton)
Janet Leitch 1724 - ????
James Leitch 1726 - ????
Anna Leitch 1729 - ????
Robert Leitch 1732 - ????
Janet Leitch 1742 - ???? (married Peter McEwan)
Isobell Leitch 1744 - ????

John Leich
b: 1??? - 17??

John was Calum's and Jamie's eight times great grandfather.

The fact that John is the boys' earliest known ancestor is confirmed from two baptismal records from his son John in which he is noted as John Leich younger, confirming the existence of a John Leich senior. Nothing else is known of him as yet, though he may be either the John Leich who had a son called John in Madderty in 1709.

John Leitch
17?? - 17??

John was Calum's and Jamie's great great great great great great great grandfather.

The fact that John's father was called John is confirmed from the baptismal records of two of his children, in which he is noted as John Leitch younger. The naming pattern also supports the link. However, there is some confusion as to which John Leitch this might have been, and hence where John junior was born.

It was previously believed from several online compiled sources that John was the son of John Leitch and Margaret Smith, born in Auchterarder in the 1720s. This belief appears to have stemmed from the fact that John married Jean Fenton in Trinity Gask, Perthshire, on July 27th 1739. The OPR entry reads as follows:

June 24 received from Jean Fenton 01 04 00
John Litch and Jean Fenton both in this parish proclaimed.

July 2nd the minr was at the Sacrament of Gask. John Litch and Jean Fenton proclaimed pro 2do (?)

July 8th...John Litch and Jean Fenton both in this parish proclaimed pro 3ho.

July 27 John Litch and Jean Fenton were married.

The phrase "both in this parish" implies a temporary residence, however, rather than the phrase "of this parish", implying origin. It is possible that the couple married in Trinity Gask perhaps as the parish of origin for Jean, and that the couple then moved to Madderty, where their own childen were born. Madderty may well have been John's home parish, a fact that gains more potential weight when the discovery of a John Leich, born in the parish in 1713, is taken into account:

Sab August 30th John Leich in Ardunnie had a child baptized.

With this new possibility now located, a serious doubt is now established in the birth of John to Margaret Smith - not least of which because no actual record of birth can be found! The previous research located online believed that John was in fact misrecorded as James in an OPR entry from 1722, but subsequent research has shown that Margaret had a second child called James in 1727, implying that the first had died in infancy.

All of the kids were born in Muirmonth in Madderty, Perthshire, hence John and Jean obviously lived there.

Recently, contact was made with Gregg Morrison in Australia, who is Calum's and Jamie's eighth cousin. Gregg traces his ancestry back to Peter McEwen, whilst Calum and Jamie trace their line through to Janet McEwen. And contact has also been established with Anne Crook in Perthshire, who traces her family back to Andrew McCewan, making her Calum's and Jamie's fifth cousin twice removed.

Anne's research can be seen at the Church of Latter Day Saints website, whilst Gregg has an amazing family website, of which the McEwan section can be viewed at the following link:
