The Leitch Family

This particular branch of the Leitch family has been traced back to 17th Century Fowlis Wester in Perthshire, Scotland.

The name Leitch is most likely derived from the Old English word 'laece'. meaning 'doctor'. The bloodsucker got its name from the doctor, not the other way around! An alternative derivation is from the ancient Gaelic surname "O'Laechaille".

The following members of the Leitch family are known to be related to Calum's and Jamie's family:

John Leitch 16?? - ????
John Leitch 1675 (approx) - ???? (married Anna Clement)
John Leitch 1703 (approx) - ???? (married Margaret Smith)
John Leitch 1720 - ???? (married Jean Fenton)
Janet Leitch 1724 - ????
James Leitch 1726 - ????
Anna Leitch 1729 - ????
Robert Leitch 1732 - ????
Janet Leitch 1742 - ???? (married Peter McEwan)
Isobell Leitch 1744 - ????

John Leitch
16?? - ????

Going so far back into the past, we are getting into dodgy ground, but if this is the correct gentleman, then John Leitch would be Calum's and Jamie's great great great great great great great great great great grandfather.

The case for John Leitch being in the family arises from two pieces of evidence. The first is that there was a John Leitch christened in Fowlis Wester, Perthshire, in 1684. This 1684 John Leitch is believed to be a late christened John Leitch actually born 1675, who later married Anna Clement (see below). The father of this John is also called John Leitch.

The second piece of evidence relates to the record of a 'Jon Leish', who paid Hearth Tax in 1694. As John Leitch did not marry until 1698 in Fowlis Wester, there is every chance that he may still have been living at home, aged about 17 or 18. However, there is the possibility that it was an 18 year old John who paid the tax, and not his father.

John Leitch
1675 (approx) - ????

John Leitch was Calum's and Jamie's great great great great great great great great great grandfather.

There was a John Leitch christened in Fowlis Wester, Perthshire, Scotland, on 28th August 1684, which would make sense if he was about nine or ten years old at the time. In those days, children could be christened at any stage, even as late as ten years old, even as late as adulthood, so it is a distinct possibility. If christened in 1684, his father would also have been called John Leitch.

John was proclaimed to marry Anna
Clement on three occasions in December 1698 in Fowlis Wester:

Sab, December 4th
...John Leitch and Anna Clement both in this par, having given up their names were proclaimed in order to future marriage and payed in to ye box ye ordinary dues (???) Bs Scots (amount unreadable, but from reverend's running total at side, works out at 1pound 6pence).
The parties named above were proclaimed for the 2nd time (*actually first).

Sab, December 11th
John Leitch and Anna Clement proclaimed for ye second time

Sab, December 25th
John Leitch and Anna Clement were proclaimed for ye 3rd time before ye neighbouring congregation.

John Leitch was Calum's and Jamie's great great great great great great great great grandfather - see below.

Patrick Leitch - unconfirmed
b: 2/9/1711

This is unconfirmed, as although Patrick is listed as the son of John Leitch in Fowlis Wester, there is no mother listed.

Anne Leitch - unconfirmed

c: 27/7/1716 d: ????

Anne is listed in the OPR as the daughter of a John Leitch in Fowlis Wester, but with no mother listed (the IGI helpfully has a Mrs John Leitch down!!!). However, with our John's wife called Anne, this is almost certainly their daughter.

John Leitch

John was Calum's and Jamie's great great great great great great great great grandfather.

John was christened on 21st November, 1703, in Fowlis Wester, Perthshire, Scotland. (The date comes from Latter Day Saints Film 1040351.)

Sab, Nov 21st - John Leitch had a child baptised called John.

John may have been born in the same year, but this may have been earlier, as this would mean he married at the age of 15.

John married Margaret
Smith on 2nd November 1718 in Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland. Information on the two was found through contact with Gregg Morrison in Australia.

In the parochial register entry for the wedding (GROS: 329/1 fr227), John's surname is spelt Leich:

(Received in charity)....from John Leich and Margaret Smith when listed for proclamation in order to marriage one pound four shillings.

Recently, contact was made with Gregg Morrison in Australia, who is Calum's and Jamie's eighth cousin. Gregg traces his ancestry back to Peter McEwen, whilst Calum and Jamie trace their line through to Janet McEwen. And contact has also been established with Anne Crook in Perthshire, who traces her family back to Andrew McCewan, making her Calum's and Jamie's fifth cousin twice removed.

Anne's research can be seen at the Church of Latter Day Saints website, whilst Gregg has an amazing family website, of which the McEwan section can be viewed at the following link:
